Shoulder Impingement

The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint. The ball is at the end of the upper arm bone known as the humerus and the socket is found on the outer aspect of the shoulder blade. Above the ball and socket is a bony prominence arising from the shoulder blade known as the acromion, the space between these two structures is the subacromial space. Here lies the rotator cuff tendons and the subacromial bursa.
The rotator cuff muscles primarily act to stabilise the shoulder joint and a bursa is a small sac containing lubricating fluid, reducing friction between the structures in the area.
